“Volunteering is what makes the wheels go around in Sun City.  There are so many opportunities in the Computer Club and beyond,” according to Class Assistant JEAN DORMER, our December Volunteer of the Month.  Jean’s wheels turn in many directions.  In addition to volunteering as a regular CA, she also volunteers as a Monitor in the Open Room and helps with special events and the Club Fair.

Her volunteerism does not stop with the Computer Club as she has served on the board of several clubs and social committees.  Currently she serves on the Murray Hill Neighborhood social committee.  Some of Jean’s hobbies include reading, playing Mah Jongg, participation in the Bird Club, Irish Heritage Society and New England Group just to name a few.

Jean says she is a news junkie and uses her computer, laptop and smartphone to keep up with politics and to stay in touch with friends and family.   When not busy with her multitude of interests in Sun City she and Tom also enjoy their frequent and sometimes extended RV trips.

Jean’s story of how she and Tom decided to move to Sun City was by chance.  During the summer of 2005 they came to Sun City from Florida to have lunch with friends.  Although she and Tom had no thoughts of retiring to an over-55 community they fell in love with what they saw and moved into their new home the following March when Jean retired from her job as an editor at a daily newspaper in Florida.  Before moving to Florida Jean was a programmer in her “first life” in the days of big boxes of punch cards at a defense contractor in Massachusetts.  Her second career, which lasted some 30 years, was in journalism.

Wow, she takes my breath away. Thanks to Jean Dormer and all our wonderful Computer Club volunteers.  YOU MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!
